International day of the Girl has been celebrated since 2012, on October 11. This particular day that has been marked aims to  highlight and address needs and challenges Girls face, while promoting Girls' empowerment and fulfillment of their Human Rights.



"Empowerment of and investment in girls are key in breaking  the  cycle of discrimination and violence and in promoting and protecting the full and effective enjoyment of their human rights"

The world’s 1.1 billion girls are a source of power, energy, and creativity – and the millions of girls in emergencies are no exception. This year’s International Day of the Girl  (IDG) on October 11 marks the beginning of a year-long effort to spur global attention and action to challenges and opportunities girls face before, during and after crises.

Worldwide, different groups of individuals and multi-sectoral partners  have been drawn to put together efforts to prevent violence against girls in emergencies and build resilient communities.

Areas of attention include :
  • Access to menstrual hygiene and other commodities 
  • Access to related gender -responsive health and nutrition information and services 
  • Addressing gender-based violence and harmful practice through a range of prevention, protection and response approaches
  • Access to Girls' education and skill-building
  • Giving Girls' voice - so that they are informing all aspects of emergency response and service put in place.
